About 50 Civil War letters from Blackford to his wife Nellie detail his experiences in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. Also family correspondence from Blackford's brothers Aaron, Jason, and John, among others. Family members lived in Findlay, Ohio; Clinton, Missouri; and Clinton, Decatur, and Springfield, Illinois.

Blackford, a native of Ohio, married Mary Ellen (Nellie) Taylor in Illinois on May 5, 1862. Enlisting as a private in Company F, 107th Illinois Infantry in August 1862, he had advanced to Captain by September 1864. He served as an aide de camp to several generals in William T.
